The International Rescue Committee first bestowed our Freedom Award for extraordinary contributions to the cause of refugees and liberty in 1957. Past honorees include Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Elie Wiesel, Vaclav Havel and Nelson Mandela. Accepting this year’s award on behalf of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) at a ceremony in New York last night were António Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and (in a videotaped message) UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie.
