IRC director of advocacy Shannon Meehan recently returned from Uganda, where she interviewed families who were forced to flee the bloody, 20-year conflict between the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army and the Ugandan government.

“The families at the Labuje Refugee Camp are the most hopeful of any of the Ugandans I spoke with about the prospect of returning to their villages,” she told me after she sent this photo. “They like to say, ‘When the grasses grow high and then dry, it’s time to go home’ — because they then have the material they need to build new huts.”
